Responsible Computing

Responsible computing consists of knowledge and action. It deals with online communities and other programs that allow you to interact. It also deals with how you use your computer and internet access. Ultimately you are responsible for what is on your computer and what you allow others to access on computer. If you choose to enter online communities, then the more you know about them the better.

Online communities should be treated like personal interactions. If you want to meet people, then be honest about who you are and what you are about. Understand however, that there are many people in online communities who are out to gather information and potentially use that in a negative way. Be cautious, just like you would on the street. Treat online communities and file sharing networks just like your daily physical community. Use the same caution that you would use when you are crossing a busy intersection by foot. Be familiar with the privacy settings and the rules and regulations governing the online community or program you are involved with.

Be knowledgeable about Federal laws that also govern usage. Be selective as to which online community you subscribe. Change passwords often and limit viewable information. The world of online communities and the internet is wonderful when you understand the reality of how it is used. Stay informed about issues in the community, and stay alert so you may have a great experience.
